- Twist out the filter at the bottom of the tub and rinse it under the tap.
- Lift out the spray arms and clear the holes with a toothpick.
- Run the kitchen tap until it is hot before starting a cycle. The incoming water needs to be around 120°F.

Older Kensington and Takoma Park kitchens often had a dishwasher added long after they were built, with long drain runs and aging shutoff valves. In Colesville and Fairland, a dishwasher swapped in by a previous owner may have its drain hose laid flat without the high loop it needs, which can send sink water back into the tub.

Hard water from private wells around Highland, Dayton and Glenelg leaves film on glasses and scale on spray arms, and that can look like a failing machine. In Columbia and Scaggsville, where kitchens have often been updated more than once, a pooling leak can start at a loose connection behind the kick plate.
Common questions
Why is there water left in the bottom of my dishwasher?
A little around the filter is normal. Standing water above the filter means a drain problem, most often a clogged filter, a kinked hose or a failed pump.
Why are my dishes still dirty after a full cycle?
Blocked spray arms, a clogged filter and cool incoming water are the usual causes. Clean those first. If it continues, the wash motor or inlet valve may need testing.
